I agree with jwwj. The problem is two-fold. The wages the farmers are paying are too low and the money people get from public benefits is too high.

The school year used to be organized around kids doing a lot of that farm work.

But indeed, there is no such thing as a job an American won't do. There is only wages that Americans won't accept for the labor required of them.

Hey, I really like your site and I read it almost every day. But in this case, your headline is not correct.

First off, why is the number of unemployed that asked to be referred to the farmers relevant? What percentage of the unemployed even KNEW that was a potential option? The article does not say.

What is TRUE is that at the wages offered by the farmers, very, very few native unemployed Americans would take the job. What that tells me is that the wages are TOO LOW. It is absurd to think that there would NOT be wage offered high enough where the unemployed would still decline to take the job picking produce. Are you really trying to make a case that if offered $500/hr, unemployed North Carolinians would not take a cucumber picking job?

Now the article does state that if wages increased, the farmers may not be profitable (it has to be assumed at current prices). If the only way the farmers could get their crop picked is to offer higher wages, then the farmers would have to charge higher prices. If no one is willing to pay the higher prices to eat their crops, then that particular crop should NOT BE GROWN.

This is all seems so basic supply and demand stuff.

This is a letter I sent to Senator Burr right after the vote...

Good afternoon.

I have just seen the results of Senators Voting on Cloture on the Motion to Proceed on S. 649. I am ashamed to see that BOTH senators from North Carolina (I cannot bring myself to say “representing North Carolina) voted WITH DIANNE FEINSTEIN and HARRY REID in favor of this piece of legislation.

Let us remember that we live in North Carolina- NOT New York or Colorado. Mayor Bloomberg’s influence is creeping into the national political agenda, which is NOT what is good for North Carolina or the country.

We have laws in place that provide for background checks. None of the laws being submitted would have done anything to prevent the shootings at Sandy Hook. Automatic weapons were not used in any of the shootings. Semiautomatic rifles, mistakenly referred to as “assault rifles,” were not used, either.
Automobiles, accidental poisoning, and cancer are killing more children than guns. We do not see “President Obama” doing anything about that. He is more concerned with disarming the citizens (his subjects) and getting on television using the tragedy at Sandy Hook to further his cause.

The economy is in a downward spiral, unemployment is at an all-time high (even if the government’s concocted figures say otherwise), and illegal immigration is driving the costs of education and healthcare up to the point where we cannot afford it. All the talk, however, is how we need to debate gun control legislation.

I am disappointed and disgusted in today’s vote. The symbol of Republicans is an elephant. I will not forget today’s vote and will be watching closely how you vote on future legislation.

I think it is safe to use Dianne Feinstein and Harry Reid as a barometer. If they support legislation, there is a good chance that it is something to vote against.

Thank you for your attention to my concern.

Flannel, I had missed that Burr was allegedly on Rand's team re the filibuster until I just read it in your previous post on your blog. I guess Burr will claim he just wants a robust debate on the floor. One of my colleagues at work yesterday said a debate might not be so bad since there would be so many Democrats looking crazy about guns on the floor of the Senate. Thing is, would the media cover it?
