Read it and weep — or buy in counties where the sales tax rate is lower. Beginning April 1st, the sales tax rate in Orange and Durham counties goes up by a quarter cent. That means a lot of what you buy will cost more. Montgomery and Buncombe counties will experience the same hike in cost of living. The combined state and local sales tax rate will be 7%. Only Mecklenburg County is higher — at 7.25%.

Clint Eastwood’s family is the subject of a new reality TV series. It looks as if his wife and kids are the main focus, but I hold out hope that Eastwood, who holds some libertarian views, will let those shine through. We’ll see.

Carrboro Commune has billed the event as a way to take back the community “commons” that has “been fenced in, boarded up, roped off, and declared ‘off-limits.’ “
According to its flier, private property is land that has been stolen, and “Earth and its abundance belong to everyone; it can be owned by no one, only maintained for the common good.”
Do you think these malcontent complainers will ever have the courage of their convictions and take up residence in countries where the dictators and warlords agree with them that property law doesn’t exist? No, they’ll continue to trash the very system that allows them to enjoy the comforts of a free society that affords them endless opportunities and the protection of the rule of law.
