Seriously?

Posted December 24th, 2007 at 10:57 AM by Jon Ham

Durham ranked 20th in the nation as the place to educate your children, according to Forbes magazine. Seriously? This calls into question all of the magazine “best of” lists. For instance, as The Herald-Sun says, Forbes claims Durham has 111 schools when in reality it has only 50 schools. Just a minor detail, I suppose. But this is the clincher that might explain why Durham even stayed on the list, much less at the top:

The article does not consider student achievement, dropouts or suspensions — some of the more common factors used to determine school system success.

I don’t know what’s more frightening; what they don’t include on the public-school fifth of the criteria or the fact that portion of the criteria is solely how many teachers and how much money are thrown at the schools. Guess that explains Milwaukee’s presence on that list at #17.

Oh, I see: So Durham is a great place to go to school, as long as you don’t care about niggly little details like, say, getting an education.
