About that consensus thing

Posted April 10th, 2008 at 11:47 PM by Jon Ham

Al Gore says global warming anti-alarmists are like Flat Earthers and that the science is “settled.” Don’t tell Western Washington University geologist Don Easterbrook:

“Despite all you hear about the debate being over, the debate is just starting,” Easterbrook said.

Easterbrook doesn’t deny that the Earth’s climate has been warming slowly since about 1980. But he argued that this warming trend fits a longstanding pattern of warming and cooling cycles that last roughly 30 years. Sunspot activity and other solar changes appear to explain the 30-year cycles, he said.

If that pattern persists, the earth could now be close to the next 30-year cooling cycle, Easterbrook said.

Hey, Al, better buy some mukluks and insulate that house of yours that uses 12 times what a normal house uses.

Gore’s statement that the science is “settled” sounds a hell of a lot like when a Creationist says that there is no dispute that the Earth was created only 6,000 years ago: In both cases, it boils down to “Because I say so.”

Hey, Al: Debates are settled. Science is not.

Looks like The Winter That Won’t Die™ will be giving me one last stab here in the southeast part of the land of cheese and beer. Fortunately, I missed the majority of the snow that went to northern Wisconsin and Minnesota.

As a housekeeping item, you’ve been tagged, Jon.
