D’oh! Wrong mayor, wrong KKK founder
Posted May 13th, 2008 at 11:17 PM by Jon HamThe Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee put out a sleazy flier against Republican Greg Davis in Mississippi that criticized the wrong man (Davis) for an alleged racial offense. Turns out that the biggest racial offense was the DCCC flier itself.
Not sure what effect the flier had, but Travis Childers, the Democrat on whose behalf the DCCC distributed the flier, won tonight.

Isn’t it a variant of the “lies telling essential truths” to grossly exaggerate a claim to a much more offensive level (Davis to Forest), with the plan that when it’s pointed out that it’s not true, you fall back on, “well, it was actually [Davis], which is almost as bad.” The initial horror at the association with the KKK still resonates, even though simply mailing a flier stating, “Mayor wants to bring statue of Davis to town,” in the first place would not have nearly the same effect.

I recall a politician being elected after a similar group published similar lies told on his behalf. Not only did he use his position to condemn the group and demand their apology to his opponent, he refused to take the office as an ill-got gain.
Unfortunately, “character” applied to politicians is most typically describing something he is, not something he’s got.
