Things are bad when vote fraud begins sounding like two Monty Python skits at once

Posted October 21st, 2008 at 11:59 AM by Jon Sanders

From Chicago, proud home of pristine politics and perennial World Series winners:

…election officials in Chicago’s northern suburbs want to know why voter registration material was sent to the dead goldfish.

“I am just stunned at the level of people compromising the integrity of the voting process,” said Lake County Clerk Willard Helander, a Republican, who said she has spotted problems with nearly 1,000 voter registrations this year.

Beth Nudelman, who owned the fish, said Princess may have landed on a mailing list because the family once filled in the pet’s name when they got a second phone line for a computer.

“There was no fraud involved,” said Nudelman, a Democrat who supports Barack Obama. “This person is a dead fish.”

I really hoped the fish’s name was Eric, but it’s “Princess Nudelman.” (Aside: who names a fish, honestly? And who signs up a fish for a phone line? Are we now to see cellphone service providers selling packages for “Friends, Family and Fish”?) But it’s not even a living fish. The registration was sent to an ex-fish.

Hmmm, which way do I want to go with this one? There’s the whole fish angle (we in Wisconsin have a different definition of the word, one that is not family-friendly, that is applied to those south of the toll booths). There’s also the likelyhood that, had the fish been still living, the owner would’ve simply assumed that identity. Then there’s the link between the outfit that tried to register that ex-fish and ACORN.

Then there’s the missed vote by Ex-Fish Princess Not-Eric Nudelman that would have gone to the Very Silly Party as opposed to the Silly Party.

Seriously, while Cook County (i.e. Chicago) has made Illinois as a whole completely unwinnable for the Republicans, the Democrats are never satisfied. Lake County, at least in the recent past, has been Republican territory. Indeed, at one point, there was a barn at the north end of the Tri-State Tollway (I-94) that had been turned into a giant GOP billboard.
