A new law in Germany prevents prospective employers from looking at your Facebook page. So, in Germany, no need to try to scrub all the pics of you drunk at parties or that time you accidentally attended that secret Hitler Jugend meeting.
They can still Google you, though.
........As you post your comment, please conform to Right Angles's simple comment policy: we welcome all perspectives, but require that comments be both civil and respectful. If you wouldn't say it to a co-worker in front of your boss, it probably is not civil and respectful. We will delete any comment that fails this test and issue a warning to the poster. A second offense will result in a ban on commenting on this site. In sum, disagreements, arguments even, are welcome; abusive behavior is not. Thanks.

Seems a bit pointless when someone careless enough to post inappropriate stuff on Facebook / not check their privacy settings (the kind of person this law is trying to protect) would probably also not uncheck the ‘show my profile in search engine results’ option – meaning even law-abiding recruiters may see experpts of dodgy FB behaviour on Google anyway!
What are your thoughts on the new law? It’d be great to get your thoughts on my short blog post on the topic – http://lcp.org.uk/blog/index.php/2010/08/facebook-privacy-employers-germany/ :-)

Natasha, I agree with you. Ultimately, it’s the individual’s responsibility. No government restrictions needed.
